Governor Signs Bill into Law, Emphasizes Collaboration with Conventional Security Outfits
The Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, has signed into law a bill establishing the Sokoto Community Guard Corps, aimed at addressing the security challenges, particularly banditry, in the state. The state House of Assembly had earlier approved the governor's proposal for the creation of the community guard corps on December 21.
During the signing ceremony at the Government House, Governor Aliyu emphasized that the establishment of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps is a significant milestone in the administration's efforts to enhance security in the state. He stated that the initiative is not intended to rival the police but to complement the efforts of conventional security outfits.
Governor Aliyu highlighted the insecurity facing Sokoto State, particularly incidents of banditry that have disrupted the peace traditionally associated with the state. The community guard corps is designed to operate at the grassroots level and support the work of existing security agencies in safeguarding lives and property.
He clarified that the community guard corps is not a substitute for the police but an additional measure to address the specific security needs of local communities. The governor called for collaboration between the new security outfit and conventional security agencies, emphasizing that they are not rivals but partners in the collective goal of ensuring a safe and secure state.
Governor Aliyu urged security agencies to recognize and support the community guard corps, emphasizing that they are present to provide assistance and share valuable information from their respective localities. The administration reaffirmed its commitment to prioritizing security measures that protect the well-being of Sokoto State residents.
The establishment of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps reflects the state's proactive approach to tackling security challenges at the community level, fostering collaboration between grassroots security initiatives and established law enforcement agencies. The success of such efforts relies on effective coordination, mutual support, and a unified commitment to creating a safer environment for all residents.
