The relocation of federal agencies from Abuja to Lagos sparked outrage, particularly among Northern senators, who protested against what they perceived as a lopsided allocation in the 2024 budget and the alleged move to under-develop the North. The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Northern Senators Forum (NSF) voiced their concerns, denouncing the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) decision to relocate and the plans of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
In response, regional groups such as Afenifere and the Middle Belt Forum criticized the Northern senators, emphasizing the importance of focusing on results rather than perpetuating regional divides. Afenifere stated that the relocation could enhance agency performance, while the Middle Belt Forum described claims of intentional underdevelopment as myopic and unpatriotic.
Senators from the Northern states, under the NSF, expressed their discontent with budget allocation and agency relocation. Spokesman Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila assured constituents of engagement with the government to address concerns. Afenifere countered by emphasizing the historical presence of some agency departments in Lagos.
While reactions varied, Chief Edwin Clark urged peace, reminding that Abuja belongs to all Nigerians. PANDEF withheld a categorical statement, stating the need for accurate information. The controversy highlights tensions over resource distribution and regional considerations in national policies.
