Lagos Demands Arrest of Candidates Impersonating Indigenes in Army Recruitment, Army Confirms Detention

The Lagos State Government has called for the arrest and trial of six northern candidates involved in the Nigerian Army recruitment process for claiming to be indigenes of the state. In a video, the candidates from Kaduna State falsely identified themselves with Lagos local governments to secure recruitment slots designated for Lagosians. Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso emphasized the criminal nature of such actions, urging the police to take action: "It is perjury and is punishable under the law of the land."

The Nigerian Army confirmed the arrest of the six candidates, citing the incident as a testament to the transparency and credibility of the recruitment process. Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu stated, "The video is a pointer to one of the processes to which the candidates were subjected to ensure only true indigenes of a particular State are recruited." An investigation will determine the extent of fraudulent activities, and those involved will be handed over to the appropriate prosecuting agency.

Onyema warned against manipulation of the recruitment process, stating that attempts to do so would be met with the full force of the law. He reassured the public of the Army's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the recruitment process, working with relevant authorities to bring culprits to justice.

Former Minister Maj.-Gen. Tajudeen Olanrewaju (retd.) called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Chief of Army Staff to investigate the violation of constitutional rights and procedural wrongs. He proposed improvements in the indigenship application process and the establishment of an autonomous Verification System Unit to monitor recruitment in collaboration with the Armed Forces.

The incident highlights the importance of stringent measures to safeguard the integrity of recruitment processes and prevent fraudulent activities related to claiming indigenship.
