New Minimum Wage Negotiations: Labor to Base Demand on Cost of Living, Government Assures Clearing of N35,000 Wage Arrears

As the prospect of new minimum wage negotiations looms, organized labor is strategically aligning its demands with the cost of living and socio-economic indicators nationwide. The Federal Government has pledged to settle arrears of the N35,000 wage award, ensuring ongoing efforts to fulfill promises to workers.

In a proactive move, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its state councils to collect comprehensive cost-of-living data in towns and local government areas. NLC's General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, emphasized the significance of accurate data, urging swift action to ensure a robust and data-driven negotiation process. State councils are tasked with submitting their findings before the end of January 2024.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, reassured trade unions during separate meetings with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Congress of University Academics (CONUA) in Abuja. She affirmed the Federal Government's commitment to paying the N35,000 wage award, addressing concerns raised by the unions and assuring that outstanding amounts would be settled shortly.
