President Tinubu acknowledges challenges of subsidy removal but expresses optimism for the future

In acknowledgment of the widespread difficulties faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidy, President Bola Tinubu assured citizens during the 54th convocation ceremony at the University of Lagos that the current hardships, impacting various sectors, including education, will soon diminish, emphasizing a promising future.

Tinubu, the Visitor to the University of Lagos, recognized the adverse effects on parents, guardians, students, and Nigerians at large. He highlighted pivotal decisions, such as the subsidy removal and a single exchange rate for the naira, which contributed to the increased cost of living. However, he provided reassurance, stating that the discomfort would be temporary.

The President affirmed the government's commitment to education by reintroducing the School Feeding Programme and implementing the Student Loan Scheme, designed to aid students financially. He also outlined ongoing initiatives, such as the autonomy for universities and the internalization of the university system through partnerships with foreign investors and universities.

In her address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, commended the university's progress, citing notable achievements in research activities and grant income.

Catholic Bishops Express Concerns Over Fuel Subsidy Removal and Economic Challenges

Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province released a communique lamenting the impact of the removal of petroleum subsidy, naira scarcity, and the declining value of the national currency on the cost of living. The bishops urged improved security measures and rejected the blessing of same-sex marriages, emphasizing the church's adherence to traditional teachings on marriage.

The communique further addressed the growing Japa Syndrome, expressing concern over the extensive brain drain as professionals and young people seek better opportunities abroad. The Bishops called on the government to implement sound economic policies, foster national development, and collaborate with the private sector to generate employment opportunities.

Supreme Council for Sharia Urges Action on Economic Decisions and Insecurity

The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria advised President Bola Tinubu to expedite action to mitigate the effects of hard economic decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidy. The group expressed solidarity with the President and called for swift measures to address insecurity and achieve food security. Additionally, they submitted a conference communique reviewing the 2023 elections, seeking consensus and solutions to election-related challenges.
