In a significant turn of events, the Speaker of the Ogun House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, has been impeached by 18 out of 26 lawmakers during a plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Bolanle Ajayi. The impeachment motion was reportedly moved by Adegoke Adeyanju, an APC lawmaker representing Yewa North 1 State Constituency, and seconded by Ademola Adeniran, another APC lawmaker representing Sagamu II State Constituency.
The newly elected Speaker is Mr. Oludaisi Elemide, the current representative of Odeda State Constituency in the Assembly. The motion for Oluomo's impeachment cited reasons such as gross misconduct, high-handedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance, poor leadership style, financial misappropriation, and incitement of members against each other.
After his election, Elemide assured the public that the new leadership would support Governor Dapo Abiodun, emphasizing that the change in leadership was not influenced by the governor. He urged calm among the residents, stating that the Assembly is now under the authority of the new leadership.
Security personnel, including the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, were present in large numbers at the Assembly complex during the plenary session. The Clerk and Deputy Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. Deji Adeyemo and Mrs. Funmilayo Adeyemi, were also present. The reasons provided for the impeachment suggest internal dissatisfaction with Oluomo's leadership style, signaling a shift in the political dynamics of the Ogun State House of Assembly.
