South African Billionaire Overtakes Dangote as Africa's Wealthiest in Forbes Rankings

For the first time, Johann Rupert and his family have clinched the title of Africa's richest individuals, according to Forbes Magazine's latest rankings. The South African billionaire's net worth of $10.3 billion has propelled him to the top spot, dethroning Aliko Dangote, whose wealth decreased from $13.5 billion in 2023 to $9.5 billion at the beginning of 2024.

The Forbes Daily billionaires ranking platform highlights significant declines in the wealth of several billionaires, indicative of economic challenges across African countries. Notably, Nigerian billionaires Rabiu Abdulsamad and Mike Adenuga have lost their spots in the billionaire rankings, with Adenuga slipping to the tenth position.

The economic downturn, devaluation of the Naira, and other economic factors have been attributed to the decrease in Dangote's wealth. Meanwhile, Patrice Motsepe, who was among the top ten richest individuals in 2023, did not retain his position in the 2024 rankings. Additionally, no woman made it to the top ten richest list at the start of the year.

The shifting dynamics in Africa's wealth landscape underscore the impact of economic challenges on high-net-worth individuals. Johann Rupert's ascent to the top signals a change in the traditional hierarchy, reflecting the evolving economic landscape on the continent.
