Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, revealed yesterday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for funding of crucial infrastructure projects, including the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano and Lagos-Ibadan highways, as well as the Second Niger Bridge II bypass projects.
Umahi stated that this approval would address financial constraints that have been impeding progress on these three significant projects. He emphasized the Federal Government's dedication to removing obstacles hindering the road infrastructure revolution it has initiated.
The announcement came during Umahi's inspection of the Lafia bypass and the dualisation of the Ninth Mile-Enugu-Otukpo-Makurdi road project in Makurdi, Benue State, accompanied by Governor Hyacinth Alia.
The 260-kilometre project, managed by China Harbour Nigeria Limited and jointly financed by the Export-Import Bank of Nigeria (85%) and the Federal Government (15%), spans the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Benue, and Enugu states. It is scheduled for completion within 48 months.
Umahi expressed gratitude for the recent approval, stating, "We were having some problems with funding but the President has solved the problem and directed immediate release of funds so that the road will continue."
He also commended the proactive measures taken by Governors Alia and Peter Mbah of Benue and Enugu respectively, in setting up task force committees to provide security at project sites. Umahi assured Governor Alia that certain requests for inclusion in the road project would be accommodated.
Furthermore, the minister announced plans to address traffic congestion at the beginning of the Mararaba-Keffi reconstruction and expansion project by constructing a flyover, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the convenience of the public.
However, Umahi also pointed out some shortcomings in the projects, urging contractors to make necessary adjustments for the comfort and convenience of motorists.
