The Dangote Petroleum Refinery marked a significant development on Monday as it welcomed its fourth shipment of one million barrels of bonny light crude oil, courtesy of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited. The $20 billion refinery, poised to be the world's largest single-train refinery, anticipates the arrival of its fifth crude oil shipment in the near future.
In a statement, the company revealed, "The fresh one million barrels of crude was the fourth consignment to be delivered to the Dangote facility out of the six million barrels of crude being expected." Officials confirmed that the refinery is on track to commence the production of refined Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) and aviation fuel (JetA1) this month.
Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, Akin Omole, shared earlier projections, stating that the refinery would receive a total of four million crude oil shipments by the end of 2023. The remaining two shipments are expected in early January 2024, paving the way for the commencement of production.
Once the entire six million barrels are delivered, the refinery will undergo an initial run, enabling the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), before progressing to Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) production.
With a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the Dangote refinery is poised to meet 100% of Nigeria's refined petroleum product requirements, including petrol, diesel, kerosene, and jet fuel. The facility also has a surplus of each product for potential export.
Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, expressed delight at the milestone, emphasizing the project's importance for the country's ability to undertake and deliver large-scale capital projects. He conveyed his anticipation for the next milestone when the refinery delivers its first batch of products to the Nigerian market. The self-sufficient marine facility of the Dangote Refinery, equipped to handle the largest vessels globally, plays a crucial role in facilitating the crude oil shipments.
