The United Kingdom's Home Office has officially initiated the enforcement of its policy prohibiting Nigerian students and other international students from bringing dependents through the study visa route. The announcement, made on Monday via X (formerly Twitter), clarified that only postgraduate research or government-sponsored scholarship students would be exempt from this restrictive measure.
"We are fully committed to seeing a decisive cut in migration. From today, new overseas students will no longer be able to bring family members to the UK. Postgraduate research or government-funded scholarships students will be exempt," stated the Home Office.
In May 2023, the UK had introduced legislation preventing Nigerian students and others studying in the country from bringing family members as dependents, with specific exceptions. This move aligns with the UK government's objective to reduce immigration, which currently stands at about one million individuals.
The new regulation includes the removal of permission for international students to switch from the student route to work routes before completing their studies to prevent misuse of the visa system. Additionally, a review of the maintenance requirement for students and dependents is planned, along with a crackdown on "unscrupulous" education agents facilitating inappropriate applications for immigration purposes rather than education.
The Home Office emphasized on its official site that the restrictions aim to substantially reduce net migration by limiting the ability of international students to bring family members, except on postgraduate research routes, and prohibiting the use of a student visa as a backdoor route to work in the UK.
Despite concerns over the impact on overall migration figures, the Home Office asserted that this rule is in line with the government's commitment to lower overall migration while ensuring that migration to the UK remains highly skilled and beneficial.
The proposal, according to the Home Office, allows the government to fulfill its International Education Strategy commitments while contributing to reducing net migration to sustainable levels. The terms of the graduate route remain unchanged, and the government emphasizes its dedication to maintaining a skilled and beneficial migration flow.
