Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, has resigned from the Labour Party in the aftermath of his money laundering conviction. Okupe, in a letter, cited ideological differences as the reason for his resignation, stating that the Labour Party is ideologically rooted in the left of the center, while he identifies as a rightist and a Liberal Democrat.
Okupe had been convicted of money laundering by the Federal High Court in Abuja, facing charges related to receiving N700 million from former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki. Although sentenced to two years in prison, the judge imposed a fine of N13 million, which Okupe opted for, avoiding incarceration.
The resignation comes after Okupe withdrew from the campaign of Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate, earlier in 2023. Okupe expressed his continued support for Obi and the campaign despite stepping aside.
He wishes the Labour Party leadership success in their future political endeavors.
