In response to the escalating wave of kidnappings by bandits in Bwari Area Council and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, held an emergency security meeting to address the growing security challenges.
During the meeting, Wike reassured residents that both his administration and security agencies were actively addressing the situation. He urged residents not to panic, acknowledging the challenges faced and emphasizing the commitment to finding effective solutions.
Wike stated, "This meeting is practically to look into such challenges and see how we will be able to resolve the problems. We are not sleeping, and security is also not sleeping. We will give every support that they require to take away the fears of the citizens or residents."
In a stern warning to council chairmen, Wike emphasized the need for them to remain in their councils and take responsibility for issues within their purview. Expressing dissatisfaction with reports of unnecessary trips, he said, "Council chairmen should know that they must live up to their responsibilities. It is not everything that happens; they would say that it is the ministers who have not taken steps."
The recent surge in kidnappings in Bwari Area Council, with daring attacks and tragic outcomes, has prompted heightened concern. Kidnappers, who have been active since December 23, 2023, reportedly dumped at least four remains of their victims around the Jere junction on the Abuja-Kaduna highway on Monday.
As the emergency security meeting addresses the challenges and outlines strategies for resolution, the FCT remains focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents amid these security concerns.
