In a recent revelation, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed that the explosion that shook Ibadan metropolis was a result of illegal mining activities taking place in one of the buildings in the Bodija area. The incident, which occurred on January 16, 2024, led to panic among residents and caused extensive damage to buildings in the vicinity.
Governor Makinde, after an onsite inspection of the explosion site, stated that the illegal miners had stored explosive devices in the building, leading to the blast. In response to the unfortunate incident, the state government has deployed first responders and relevant agencies to conduct comprehensive search and rescue operations.
"We visited the scene of the explosion... This unfortunate incident resulted in death and injury to residents in the vicinity and also affected properties," Governor Makinde stated.
The government has initiated measures to provide temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected, ensuring support for their rebuilding efforts. Preliminary investigations by security agencies revealed that the house in Bodija was occupied by illegal miners who stored explosive devices, prompting further inquiries into the matter.
As part of the governor's response, medical bills for all victims will be covered by the government, and support will be extended to affected residents. The current count stands at 77 injured victims, with most treated and discharged, along with two fatalities.
"May their souls rest in peace and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss," expressed Governor Makinde.
He urged residents to remain calm, avoid the immediate scene of the incident, and contact emergency services for assistance. The ongoing rescue operations involve first responders, security personnel, and medical teams working diligently.
The governor concluded by asking for prayers for those affected by the disaster and emphasized that anyone found culpable for the incident would be brought to justice.
