The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed deep concern over the escalating specter of insecurity witnessed across the country in 2023. NBA President, Yakubu Maikyau, issued a statement on Tuesday, urging President Bola Tinubu to give top priority to the security of lives and properties in 2024.
The NBA President condemned the attacks on Christmas Eve in Plateau State, where over 100 people lost their lives. He questioned whether the attacks resulted from poor intelligence gathering or a deliberate failure to act.
Maikyau called on President Tinubu to ensure that no part of the country is left ungoverned, emphasizing the need for a demonstrable commitment to national security. He urged the government to make significant investments in security and adopt a holistic approach, considering the unique challenges in different regions.
The statement also addressed the accidental airstrike in Kaduna on December 4, 2023, describing it as inexcusable and unacceptable. Maikyau emphasized the lack of inter-agency synergy and coordination, urging authorities to address the gaps in the security architecture.
On the economic front, the NBA President called for additional measures to address the difficulties associated with subsidy removal. He urged President Tinubu to undertake budgetary reforms that stimulate the economy without causing inflation and improve electricity generation and transmission.
With the passing of the 2024 budget by the National Assembly, Nigerians look to President Tinubu for reassurance that sacrifices will yield positive results and genuine efforts are underway to alleviate their pain and suffering. The NBA's statement reflects the growing concern over security challenges and the need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts to address them.
