In a devastating incident on the Jebba/Ilorin Express road, at least 11 individuals lost their lives in the early hours of Tuesday. The fatal accident involved a DAF Truck and an 18-passenger Toyota Hiace bus, leaving seven other passengers with serious injuries. The crash occurred at Aiyere village along the Bode-Saadu-Ilorin route around 4:50 am, attributed to wrongful overtaking and speed violation by one of the vehicles, as reported by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
FRSC's Public Relations Officer for Kwara Sector Command, Basambo Olayinka, stated that preliminary investigations revealed the Toyota Hiace bus, enroute from Gombe to Lagos, wrongfully overtook another vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision with an oncoming DAF Truck. Of the 18 people involved, 11 tragically lost their lives, while the seven injured were promptly rescued and taken to Ifeoluwa Hospital, Bode Saadu, for treatment.
The sector commander, Stephen Dawulung, has initiated a thorough investigation into the crash, expressing deep sympathy for the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery. Dawulung emphasized the importance of driving within speed limits, avoiding night journeys, and ensuring adequate rest to prevent fatigue, which contributes to accidents with severe consequences.
