President Bola Tinubu, in his New Year address to Nigerians, reassured the nation that the economic hardships resulting from the removal of fuel subsidy would soon be alleviated. Emphasizing that every decision since assuming office on May 29 has been in the country's best interest, President Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by citizens and outlined ongoing measures to address them.
The President justified the removal of fuel subsidy during his Independence Day speech, stating that it was unsustainable and redirected trillions of naira spent annually towards sectors like healthcare, transportation, education, housing, and national security. Despite the initial discomfort experienced by individuals, families, and businesses, President Tinubu assured citizens that a framework for palliatives was being developed to mitigate the effects of the subsidy removal.
Acknowledging the rising cost of living, high inflation, and an unacceptable underemployment rate, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to endure present difficulties for a better future. He emphasized the need for citizens to remain resilient, expressing confidence that tough times are temporary and that Nigeria is capable of overcoming current challenges.
President Tinubu highlighted ongoing economic recovery plans, focusing on power projects to ensure a reliable electricity supply. Agreements made during COP28 in Dubai, particularly with the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, were mentioned to expedite the Siemens Energy power project. The President emphasized the importance of steady electricity supply for meaningful economic transformation.
To ensure food security, President Tinubu outlined plans to cultivate vast farmlands across the country for staple crops. He also pledged to simplify fiscal and tax policies to create a conducive business environment for local and foreign investments. The President committed to fighting obstacles hindering business competitiveness in Nigeria, expressing readiness to remove any impediment.
In his 2024 Budget presentation, President Tinubu listed eight priority areas, including national defense, job creation, macro-economic stability, investment environment optimization, human capital development, poverty reduction, and social security. He assured Nigerians that the impact of government efforts would be felt by every citizen, emphasizing the implementation of a new national living wage for workers in the new year.
President Tinubu concluded his address by calling for unity among citizens, urging collaboration for the peace, progress, and stability of Nigeria. He extended his wishes for a happy and prosperous year 2024, invoking divine blessings on the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
