Suspended Minister Denied Access to President Tinubu Amid N585m Scandal

In a recent development, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, was reportedly denied access to President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The suspension came in the wake of controversies surrounding financial transactions authorized by the minister in her ministry.

President Tinubu's swift action in suspending Edu has been commended by the Civil Society Organisation, Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative in Nigeria (CSCHEI). The organization has applauded the president for ordering the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to thoroughly investigate the alleged financial infractions.

Despite arriving at the presidential villa with the intention of discussing the suspension with the president, Edu was blocked from meeting him in his office. Her access tag to the villa was immediately withdrawn, and she was escorted out of the president's office in a State House security vehicle.

Responding to the minister's suspension, the Director General of CSCHEI, Kunle Yusuff, emphasized that Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria will not tolerate any administrative rascality or abuse of power by government appointees. Yusuff stated that CSCHEI is committed to working with relevant agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the allegations that led to Edu's suspension.

He further highlighted the importance of maintaining financial integrity, especially considering President Tinubu's efforts in promoting Nigeria's investment programs globally. CSCHEI plans to roll out training programs for NGOs and CBOs to enhance their capabilities in intelligence gathering, reporting, monitoring, and evaluation. This initiative aims to strengthen Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria to be proactive, strategic, and tactical in fulfilling their responsibilities.
