Former President Muhammadu Buhari emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency during his tenure as he addressed attendees at the launch of two books chronicling his achievements. Authored by Femi Adesina and edited by Dr. Udu Yakubu, the books, titled "Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser Media and Publicity (2015–2023)" and "Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy (2015–2023)," shed light on Buhari's eight years in office.
Buhari, visiting the nation's capital for the first time since leaving office in May 2023, asserted that his administration maintained records of its stewardship, anticipating the need to account for the trust placed in him. He stressed the importance of documentation in preventing revisionism and distortion of historical events.
The former president applauded the efforts of the authors in documenting his administration's achievements, stating, "This event today is part of accounting for our two terms in office." He emphasized that his government operated with transparency and accountability, aware that posterity would be the ultimate judge.
Acknowledging the continuity of governance, Buhari expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, affirming confidence in the quest for a better Nigeria. He recognized the necessity of hard decisions in the pursuit of national development, urging understanding from the public and emphasizing that sacrifices are part of the nation's journey.
In response to potential revisionism and falsehoods about his tenure, Buhari found solace in the existence of records that will remain inviolable. He concluded, "When some people engage in deliberate falsehood and distortion of facts that pertain to our tenure in office, I take solace in the fact that records are there, and will remain inviolable."
