The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) has raised concerns over the state of Nigeria's economy since President Bola Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023. During a national conference on "Matters Arising From 2023 Election and Associated Socio-Economic Challenges," the Muslim organization expressed discontent with the administration's handling of economic issues, particularly highlighting the adverse impact on the cost of living, scarcity of the national currency, and rising unemployment rates.
AbdurRasheed Hadiyyatullah, the President of SCSN, lamented the nation's current situation, stating, "We campaigned for and supported this government until it came into power, but now we are suffering." He emphasized the failure of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, which played a significant role in President Tinubu's electoral success, to translate into positive development for the country.
Hadiyyatullah criticized the administration's lack of progress, pointing out the sharp increase in the cost of living and the scarcity of the national currency. He also raised concerns about rising unemployment rates, expressing disappointment with the current state of affairs under the new government.
In addressing corruption and inefficiency within the government, Hadiyyatullah called out unnamed ministers for alleged treasury looting and urged those not committed to the nation's welfare to resign. He stated, "Some of the ministers are looting the treasury. We have all seen and read about it. While we sympathize with this government, the way forward is for some of these ministers to step down and make way for individuals who are honest and dedicated to working for the nation."
In contrast, Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima, the former governor of Zamfara State, voiced support for the present administration. He cited the recent Supreme Court judgment as evidence of President Tinubu's commitment to democratic principles. The differing perspectives within the Muslim community highlight the ongoing debates and challenges facing the current administration.
