NNPC Limited Unearths 83 Illegal Refineries and 15 Pipeline Connections in Niger Delta Within a Week

In a recent announcement via its official Twitter handle, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) revealed that it has uncovered a staggering 83 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta over the past week. Additionally, 15 illegal pipeline connections were discovered during the same period, showcasing the persistent challenge of oil theft and vandalism in the region.

According to the NNPC Limited's statement, between January 6 and 12, a total of 211 incidents of oil theft and vandalism were reported. The incidents included seven cases of vandalism, with a wellhead in the Umuajuloke community in Rivers State being one of the affected sites.

The report highlighted the extent of the issue, with nine recorded cases of oil spills caused mainly by vandalism. Notably, Ogboinbiri in Bayelsa State suffered damage due to oil spills.

The NNPC Limited disclosed, "83 illegal connections were spotted in Rivers, Abia, Imo, and Bayelsa States." The company shared a drone-shot video revealing pockets of illegal refineries in Owaza, Abia State, and illegal oil connections in Olodiama, Bayelsa State, and Obuzor, Abia State.

The efforts to combat these activities also resulted in the discovery of five illegal oil storage sites in Central Boma and Cocoa Camp in Bayelsa State, along with the confiscation of sacks of crude oil in Iba, Rivers State.

Law enforcement operations saw the apprehension of 60 wooden and fibre boats in Akwa Ibom, Delta State, and Rivers State. The incidents were spread across deep blue waters and various regions, with 22 suspects arrested so far.

This development underscores the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in curbing oil theft and protecting critical infrastructure in the Niger Delta. Despite intensified efforts, oil theft remains a persistent issue, with significant economic consequences as highlighted by the Federal Government's revelation of over N4.3tn worth of crude oil stolen in 7,143 pipeline vandalism cases within five years.
