In a tragic incident on the Kaduna-Zaria expressway, six lives were lost, and 11 individuals sustained injuries in a multiple road crash. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Commander, Kabir Nadabo, reported that the accident occurred at Aliko filling station on Tuesday at approximately 06:25hrs.
According to Nadabo, the collision involved a Toyota bus traveling from Ilesha to Batsari, Katsina State. The vehicle, reportedly speeding, lost control and collided with another moving vehicle, resulting in the fatal crash. The rescue team from Zebra 35 Rigachikun responded promptly to the scene and conducted the rescue operation.
Nadabo attributed the cause of the accident to speeding and dangerous driving, leading to the temporary halting of motorists. He emphasized that most road traffic crashes on the highway were caused by drivers from other states, not from Kaduna, and were often due to driver fatigue.
The FRSC conducted an initial investigation, revealing that 23 people were involved in the crash, with 11 sustaining injuries, and sadly, all six individuals who lost their lives were on the Toyota bus.
Expressing sadness over the incident, Nadabo noted that Kaduna state is a critical corridor, and the state command has established safety measures to guide transporters, particularly during the yuletide season. He urged stakeholders, including transport unions, to advocate for safety among drivers and emphasized the importance of educating motorists to reduce road traffic crashes.
In December, the FRSC had issued warnings against overloading and dangerous driving, including nighttime driving. Corps Marshal Dauda Biu led a special patrol along the Zuba-Kaduna Expressway to ensure compliance with traffic rules and regulations, emphasizing that respecting these rules contributes to safer highways and the free flow of traffic. The FRSC continues to prioritize its duty of saving lives and creating awareness about road safety.
